Matter Of Utmost Importance-Privacy

Privacy is a basic human right. The home is a bastion of freedom, as well as privacy. An invasion of your home is a serious violation of your privacy. And of course, an invasion of privacy is an abuse of human rights.

Home is a place where the most intimate human activities take place-Marital, domestic and family interactions; bodily and toilet functions, and activities that carried out for the maintenance of health and well being.

Home is a place where you are able to feel the warmth of being in this world. You are totally relaxed, away from public scrutiny and even friendly gaze. It is where you can be as open as you fancy, without inviting examination or judgment by people other than your closest family members.

On a hot sultry day, you can either be dipped into a comfortably cool bathtub, or you can sleep in the raw, just as your wish. On a freezing Malaysian night, you can wear the silver fox and mink coat if you desire. And there are many other things you can do, without being labelled a pervert or a social misfit.

At home, you can also stay in the washroom as long as you like, and sit on the toilet bowl in any position you fancy, as long as you are not intruding into time and space of your fellow occupants. And you have the right to slink around in your favourite items of clothing, say, an outrageously gaudy housecoat. You are forgiven for not displaying the highest standards etiquette or the most outstanding dress sense. You can even slurp your soup and get away with it.

The thought that there is a CCTV or bug strategically placed to record your most private bodily functions is reprehensible. The possibility that your most private images will be circulated for all to see is indeed unacceptable.

The falling vacant of the state legislative assembly seat of Selangor state recently reflects on the most fundamental individual right that has been invaded, mainly due to the political reasons. Just some partially-nude photographs can force a woman who has done nothing wrong but being “kept under surveillance” by unscrupulous quarters to resign as a representative that the people had selected and trusted. Smearing one’s good reputation by such underhand attempts tells us a little more about the true face of our politics, and I am truly saddened and disappointed to live in a country where the method of achieving an ulterior motive is such uncivilized.

  1. I agree totally!!! If this invasion of privacy is politically motivated, I must say that politics in Malaysia is getting as dirty as public toilets here!!
