Local stunning news

What a sad sight for our country’s politics. The recent political maneuverings in Perak for power have thrown the state into chaos. It stunned me (as well as the whole nation of Malaysia) when it was reported this morning that the Perak’s government has been toppled and it is either a snap state election will be held or a new government will be formed(BN), depending on the Sultan’s decision. It is unfortunate that this political turmoil comes at the time of global economic slowdown. Instead of pooling our resources to combat the recession, our politicians have regrettably decided to embark on a political power game to control the state. Their actions reflect the quality and integrity of our elected representatives.

From what we have seen, it appears obvious that party hopping by elected representatives is not only immoral and unethical but a highly corrupt practice as well, which the people are getting fed up and frustrated. You can call it whatever you like, cheating, disloyalty, betrayal or treachery, but it is an established practice in our country.

As usual, those who lose claim it is wrong but those who benefit say it is all right as long as no monetary inducements are involved. They will go out to justify their actions in the interest of their constituents whom they serve.

MPs and state assemblymen are lawmakers who represent the people’s interests in Parliament and the state assemblies respectively. Their deliberations and debate on policies to be formulated will decide the present and shape the future of the nation and its citizens.

It is therefore of paramount importance that only those highly integrity and credibility are selected to be our “wakil rakyat”(representatives of the people). There are no short cuts to winning the hearts of the people other than hard work, dedication and sincerity.

So, it is imperative to introduce laws to check this practice of party hopping to protect the interests of voters. It would be appropriate to declare a seat vacant and call fresh elections once an elected representative crosses over to another party. This would not only help check defections but also put pressure on the parties to be more stringent in the selection of their candidates.

Well, I think, it is of greatest and gravest importance for our wakil rakyat , both from ruling parties and opposition parties to get their priorities right. They must stop this political game for now, put aside their differences and unite to formulate sound and viable policies to steer the nation out of the economic downturn.
